Join the Mies van der Rohe Society for this fluid and energetic engagement that will emphasize the work of Mies van der Rohe as teacher and educator at IIT and the distinguished work of his students (and their students and faculty)!
Exhibition: Long Spans + Prairie GardensNoteworthy architectural drawings will be featured in an exhibition demonstrative of the Second Chicago School whose origins can be traced to Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's arrival to Chicago and the advent of Modernism. One of Mies' most important students, Myron Goldsmith, said, "A building should be a coherent work of structural art in which the detail suggests the whole and the whole suggests the detail". Alfred Caldwell was hired by Mies van der Rohe in 1944 to teach landscape architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), College of Architecture. He is quoted as saying, "the plants as drawn are not general, but specific botanical studies, as important to the architecture as the elements of the building itself".
Birthday Party Celebration: Flower PowerWe're throwing it back to 1970! Join us for a party that pays homage to the era of McCormick Place's reopening and celebrate the class of 1970's 50th year anniversary. Nod to the decade by wearing your finest day-glo colors or flowers in your hair!
Long Spans and Prarie Gardens refers to the unusual coming together of structure with prairie species to suggest the richness of structure coupled with the presence of prarie flowers and grasses.
